13 March 2024 saw the release of our seventh episode of the Fraud Hunter interview format. Finovox CEO Marc de Beaucorps had the opportunity to meet Jonathan Spedale, Network Investigator and Fraud Analyst. Blockchain, crypto, documentary fraud in e-commerce, testing Finovox, meeting hackers... Their conversation was rich in information.
Here is an extract from the meeting.
Jonathan Spedale :
I have a problem with companies that say "fraudsters are always one step ahead". Because for me, the big problem is that these companies don't monitor. In my view, monitoring is super important. As soon as you see a fraud being created, you're in a position to be in time to start preparing for it.
Honestly, I know plenty of people who say "we're late! But on many issues, I have the impression that we could not have been late. Secondly, we're putting on too many band-aids. In other words, we're doing what we can to protect the sector that's affected or the fault, and that's a shame.
Marc de Beaucorps What are your general recommendations? There's what you've just said about anticipating as much as possible and cutting things short as soon as you see a problem, but do you have any other recommendations for people working in anti-fraud?
Jonathan Spedale It depends on the sector. But for example, in the e-commerce sector, there are people who had invested a lot of money and resources in tools and analyses that focused on payment. But today, with the analysis of SP2s, apart from fake advisor fraud, there is no longer much carding fraud. It's no longer possible, because 3D Secure protects transactions.
So I think we need to shift the focus a little on logistics, first of all, but have analyses that focus more on online intelligence. To find out what a company's online footprint is. For example, you go to fraud forums, search for the name of your company with Ctrl + F and see if your company is affected in any particular place.
